Roosendael

From abbey to youth residence centre

Eight hundred years ago, a Cistercian abbey was built here that would last for at least five centuries. Among the remaining structures are the Pest House and the 17th-century moat as well as the gatehouse and coach house from the 18th century. After the French revolution, the abbey was sold and turned into a private country residence. In the 19th century, the impressive English landscape park was planted. The current manor house was built in 1920.

Since 1959, the domain has served as a residence centre for school groups and youth associations. Today, the domain of Roosendael is host to overnight guests and hikers. Several buildings have in the meantime become protected monuments, and the surrounding landscape also enjoys protected status.

The role of Kempens Landschap

The non-profit Roosendael has leased the domain since 1984, and our organisation became owner of the site in 2004. Since then, almost all the buildings have been restored and refurbished, and the park landscape has been enhanced. The moat was completely repaired in several stages.
